How to Find the Best Location For Your Coffee Shop and Turn Coffee Into Gold!

Stop! Before you open your coffee shop ask yourself one question:

What’s the one thing that will make your shop a money spinner?

The answer is very simple – location, location, location. But many people overlook this starting point. They look for a shop that will cost them the least rent and tell themselves that their shop will be run so well that people will flock to it. But remember, consumers are fickle! And lazy! If your shop is not in the right place, whatever you do and whatever you offer, your business will be limited by its location.

So, don’t commit yourself to any premises until you know how many people will pass by your shop each day. You will be investing a huge amount of your time and money into your new business and you really won’t want it to fail. Put aside as much time as possible to find the best position for your shop. Take a clipboard and stand outside a popular coffee shop – count how many people walk past the shop and how many stop for a coffee. (more…)

Knowing About The Coffee Shop Equipment Basics

It is very important that you invest in the right equipment for your coffee shop. You don’t want to open your business and then realize it is seriously lacking elements you need to be a quality business for your customers. Finding out at that point is going to result in you having to invest more money, and that is never productive. Keep in mind that the right equipment for your coffee shop may be very different than what someone else needs for theirs.

You will need to have industrial sized coffee pots in place so you can have plenty of it fresh and ready to go. Most people will ask for regular coffee but make sure you have a couple of fresh pots of decaffeinated as well. It can take several minutes for a pot of coffee to brew so always be prepared. As you get low make sure more is started so there is always a continuous supply.

Coffee grinders are essential if you plan to offer your own freshly ground coffee. This can definitely improve the quality of it and gain you more repeat customers. Should you decide to use coffee grounds instead make sure you get them from a supplier known for the best tasting coffee products.

Don’t forget the espresso machine for your coffee business as it will give you the ability to make plenty of specialty drinks. Espresso machines can be tricky to operate though so look for those that are user friendly. Automated espresso machines ensure the right amount of ingredients are dispensed each time. Spend plenty of time training employees on how to operate the espresso machine so you won’t have any issues. (more…)

Things to Avoid When Choosing Cafe Furniture

Choosing cafe furniture can seem like an easy task – after all, you just need to find something that goes with your decor and looks good, right? If this is the attitude you take you may find your sales dropping and customers leaving without any real explanation. Believe it or not even furniture that looks great can make people’s dining experience a bad one. Let’s take a look at some negative attributes your new furniture might possess:

Shape

A chair that stands out because of great design can be extremely uncomfortable to actually use. Imagine if the chair is quite slim and unyielding – how would a larger customer use it? Likewise very tall bar stools, if they don’t have footrests, can be almost impossible to climb onto for shorter people or anyone who’s not in their prime. You should choose furniture based around average heights and weights to make it comfortable for as many people as possible.

Material

The material you should choose depends very much on the climate in your area. Aluminium chairs for example can be very cold in winter, and leather chairs can get very hot in summer. This can be uncomfortable for your customers even if the chairs themselves look great. The chair covering should also be durable no matter what your clientele – spills and stains are inevitable and a durable material will fare a lot better than a delicate one, not to mention being easier to clean. Starting a Coffee Shop – Equipment Needs

So you have decided on starting a coffee shop! Congratulations! In my coffee shop business plan package, I go into more detail regarding equipment but due to space here, I am only going to give you some basic ideas of what to consider when looking at your equipment needs.

First of all, do yourself a favor and DO NOT buy any used equipment unless you know the exact age, where it came from, who used it, and that maintenance records are verifiable. I am only referring to anything with a motor or compressor. Used sinks, tables, counters, etc are fine as long as they are in decent shape. All other equipment, be VERY careful!

Even if you get it from a friend, you might be assured by them that the equipment was maintained properly and often, however did they get it used and can they get that guarantee from whom they bought it from? And how old really is it?

As you may have guessed, I fell into this trap and had things breaking down when I did not expect it shortly after I opened my coffee shop. Yes even my espresso machine. I was in a bad spot then! Luckily I had access to a one group machine for backup and a local guy was able to fix the other fast but you may not be as lucky. (more…)

Business Basics – How To Develop A Successful Business

The word business used to drive fear into my heart. It seemed like such an overwhelming and complicated process, that required years of study to understand its full implications. As I have grown up, I have come to develop a different understanding of the word business. To me, business basically means giving people what they want, and charging them for it in some way. In this article, I’m going to shed light on what the word business is really about, and what it takes to develop a successful and profitable business.

What Is A Business?

A business is the ongoing process of supplying products, or services, to customers, and charging them for it in some way.

How To Develop A successful Business

A few things are required to develop a strong, long term, and viable business idea

1) A Large Target Market

Always develop a business idea around an area that is in high demand. For example, if you were to develop a weight loss business, you would certainly have plenty of customers who would be interested in your services. If you were to open a second hand black door handle shop, you might get some customers, but most likely, you won’t get very many. Second hand black door handles aren’t a very high demand product.

2) Excellent Service

I remember going to a cafe and getting terrible service. It almost felt like I was committing a crime ever time I ordered something to eat. (more…)

Coffee Shop Start Up – Not Another One!

First of all, let me start off by saying congratulations! You have decided on starting a coffee shop. Welcome to the wonderful world of specialty coffee!

Before you start your own coffee shop, in order to gain ultimate success you will need to find an under served area (under served by this industry, I mean!) to open your shop in. This will be your best option.

You don’t have to be the only coffee shop in any given radius, however. If there are other shops in the area, determine if the people of your target area are in need of another coffee shop.

Using Starbucks to your advantage can actually gain you success: do you think they would open a store in a poor or unfeasible area? The answer is no! The biggest plus is that Starbucks brings to any area awareness for specialty coffee, telling people it’s ok to pay $5.00 for it.

To put things in your favor, do not mimic anyone. Set yourself apart and be unique! Coming up with a theme will work in your favor too. For instance, in Ohio where I am from there is a talkie-era themed coffee house called, appropriately ‘Talkies’. It’s decorated with talkie-era film memorabilia. Even the sign and logo reflect it. Things like this are original but carry the specialty coffee image. (more…)

Open A Cafe

If you dream of that cozy little café on the corner enticing visitors to come inside, it may not be as far as you think. Making the decision to open a café is not an overnight choice. A lot of thought and planning must go into any business undertaking. Mapping out a complete and thorough business plan is always your first action.

A business plan will allow for a greater description of your café. If there is a certain theme or style you wish to apply to the café it will need to be expressed in as much detail as possible. Investors and business partners want to see that you have clearly thought out all aspects and possess a strong vision. The choice to purchase or lease your structure will come in here as well. There are pros and cons to each so you need to know what will be most beneficial to your situation. A lease is often easier to obtain and does not leave you with a building to sell if the café isn’t successful.

When selecting your location, choices should be based on your chosen target market. For example, some may open a café on the side of the highway because their chosen consumer is the travellers and truck drivers. Alternatively, you will also find cafes in quiet neighborhoods where they are accessible by foot as well as car. Location plays a huge role in deciding who will walk through your door with money in hand.

You want to be careful when planning your menu that you are as original as possible. (more…)
