Alberta Initial Survey Claims No Leak At Oilsands Tailings Pond

Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada (AHN) – An initial investigation by Alberta’s Environment Ministry claims there is no leak at the oilsands tailings pond at the Canadian Natural Resources’ Horizon operations.

The facility is located 70 kilometers (43.5 miles) of Fort McMurray, near a First Nations community.

Environment Minister Rob Renner insists the pond is working as designed. He added if problems were to develop that the ministry would resolve it.

However, federal Environment Minister John Baird was not convinced and said he would send inspectors to look into the reports of leak. Baird told the House of Commons that federal probers would be on the Alberta site on Tuesday.

According to reports, the western part of the pond was not properly contained and it risks contamination of the food chain because of the lack of barrier that would prevent animals from drinking the water with leftover bitumen, clay and heavy metals.

The federal Environment Ministry is becoming stricter on tailing ponds following the death of over 1,000 ducks in Alberta’s lakes.
