Terrance Forbes It does not surprise me to find that the U.S.A. in the largest consumer of coffee on the planet. The numbers are staggering. Dunkin donuts serves thirty (30) cups of coffee a second. Starbucks serves over 40 Million customers a week. 500 Million cups of coffee are consumed every day in the U.S.A. Surveys show that 159 million Americans drink 3 to 4 cups of coffee daily. Coffee is the 2nd. most actively traded commodity in the world today, (second only to Oil) making it a $90 Billion industry.
The short history of coffee in America begins back during the Civil War. Prior to the Civil War most of the population did not drink Coffee. We were a Tea drinking culture. Remember out Fore Fathers and the Boston Tea Party. Coffee drinking was here but it was almost an under-ground thing. It was viewed as “Satins Brew”. It was considered a curse from the Middle East. Many religious groups at that time gave it the thumbs down and frequently spoke out against drinking Coffee. It also has not surprised me over the years to find out that most of the American Coffee Drinkers know the health risks associated with its consumption.
