Tokyo, Japan (AHN) – A magnitude 6.5 earthquake shook northeastern Japan on Monday, prompting the country’s meteorological agency to issue a tsunami warning for the Pacific coast of Miyagi Prefecture.
The Japan Meteorological Center said an 18-inch high tsunami could be generated by the temblor that struck at 7:24 a.m. and hit the Pacific coast of Miyagi. There were no immediate reports of damage or injury.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was 10.6 miles deep and 67 miles east of Sendai.
The Pacific coast of Miyagi was among those hit by a huge tsunami on March 11 following a magnitude 9 earthquake.
