New York, NY, United States (AHN) – The Federal Communications Commission is investigating “mystery” data charges by Verizon Wireless. The fees assessed by the third largest wireless carrier in the United States affected millions of customers.
Verizon estimates that the total charges, which took place over the past two years, amount to $50 million. The mystery fees related to data charges and have now prompted the telecommunications giant to issue 15 million refunds to customers.
Most of the refunds will range between $2 to $6 and will be issued over the next two months.
The FCC launched an investigation into the matter 10 months ago after customers began complaining about the charges and incorrect billing.
“Verizon Wireless issues credits to customers from time to time based on regular review and monitoring,” Mary Coyne, deputy general counsel at Verizon Wireless said in a statement. “When we identify errors, we remedy them as quickly as possible.”
Despite Verizon conceding to the errors and issuing the refunds, the company may still be penalized by the FCC.
“We’re gratified to see Verizon agree to finally repay its customers,” said Michele Ellison, enforcement bureau chief at the commission. “But questions remain as to why it took Verizon two years to reimburse its customers and why greater disclosure and other corrective actions did not come much, much sooner.”
